California Dreamin’

Well, here we all are, slightly older than when last we met.

For me it’s been a calculable shift; my birthday was 5 days ago, and I’m now 29 years old.

People always ask if you feel differently, feel older, on your birthday, and it’s always a little joke.  Of course you don’t feel older, you’re supposed to say, because your birthday is just another day in a long string of days that make up years that make up your life.  But I do feel older now than I did last week, in a very positive way.  I think, for the first time in my life, working for myself and married to a good dude and living in an actual house (that we rent), I feel like a real human adult.  It’s kind of scary, but also kind of wonderful and relief-filled.  I think I’ve felt like a kid who was trying to pass for a number of years.  But now I’m 29.

The last month has been hectic, to say the least.  There was a business trip option to California that I felt was really, truly important to growing CMP New Media (which has a new website), and it coincided with a play reading opportunity in Los Angeles (which fell through).  So I picked up a few extra clients and have been working like a maniac to be able to afford heading to Cali in July, which, if you haven’t priced it, is THE HIGH season.  As a result, I leave for California this morning completely spent and exhausted.  I just got back from Louisiana a week ago, and I didn’t really relax on that trip, as it was mostly business (playwrighting and new media), too.  I’ve been in Abingdon just long enough to have a reading as part of the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights, throw a joint birthday party for myself and my husband, wash my clothes, and repack.  I don’t want to leave Miles again so soon; I feel like a kid going to camp who feels homesick even before she leaves.  I never thought I’d feel that way again, but he’s home now.

But hesitation and fatigue and wishing for another week to catch up aside, I’m extremely excited about today’s trip.

I’ll be visiting Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento over the next 10 days.  I’ll get to see all kinds of good pals, some of whom I last laid eyes on during my last LA trip in 2009, others of whom are new babies I have never held yet.  I’m going to drive HWY-101 up and down the California coast with a good friend, and spend three days on the set of a client’s new movie.  I am going to listen to a lot of Katy Perry and Coconut Records.  I plan to be thrilled and ecstatic and nostalgic and very busy.  I am going to hug a lot of people. I promise lots of updates.

I just need a nap real quick first.
