Recipe :: Sweet Buttermilk Biscuits

Feb 6, 2011 by

This recipe almost feels like cheating, since it is merely a simple modification of my Basic Biscuits.  But these little guys are so delightful I felt like they deserved their own page.
Sweet Buttermilk Biscuits
2 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
1 tbsp butter, melted

  1. Set oven to 450 degrees
  2. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl
  3. Add shortening to dry mixture and combine with your hands until the ingredients become crumbly
  4. Add buttermilk slowly, pausing to combine by hand, until a ball starts to form.  Add cream.  The dough ball should easily cohere into one mass, and not stick to your hands too much.  Add more flour if it’s too sticky.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, press dough into 1/2 inch thickness.  You really don’t need a rolling pin, your hands should be fine.
  6. Cut with a floured round cutter or small cup.  Or use a cookie cutter in any shape for extra super fun times!
  7. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and brush melted butter over the top of each biscuit.
  8. Bake 8-10 minutes or until edges are light golden brown
Yields 10 large or 14 small biscuits.

Serve warm with butter, honey, preserves, or cinnamon.

To reheat, wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for 15-20 seconds on high.
