Thus it begins… one month without restaurants.

One month sans restaurants.
I better learn some awesome recipes but quick.

In order to better know what I’m eating, buying, and supporting, and also in order that I may work on perfecting lots of different kinds of recipes, I have decided to spend an entire month avoiding restaurants, pubs, and any place I would be asked to pay for food.  The one exception I am allowing myself is coffee shops, since I have quite a few meetings therein, but all I am allowed to do at these meetings is buy coffee, no food.

I am absolutely going to miss meatless gyros from Chicago Diner, phuket noodles from Joy’s, and cupcakes from Southport Grocery, but my hope is that I will miss these things so much I’ll try to figure out how to make them for myself.  And that will benefit us all in the long run.

This past weekend, I sat down with my cook books and planned my entire menu for this week, lunch and supper.  I felt not a little bit like the school lunch lady, but it was fun.  And I got to use these.  So that was good.  I then proceeded to Whole Foods and bought the week’s groceries, which was fairly expensive, but as previously reported, this is where I have decided to shop.  Then last night, Miles and I went on a lovely date to my favorite Chicago restaurant, Red Rooster Café (which I was pleased to note uses produce and meat from local farms, which are listed in the window), which made for a lovely temporary farewell to dining out.

I’m ready to go.  If any of these recipes turn out okay, I’ll post them in the recipe section.

Week’s Menu
Tuesday: Taco Soup
Wednesday: Burritos, Mocha punch
Thursday: Corn chowder, pumpkin muffins
Friday: Breaded fish or “chicken,” chocolate meltaway spoons (for coffee), rosemary fries, champagne cupcakes
